Employee Spotlight: Tom, Lead Full-Stack Engineer

Introduce yourself

Hey! I’m Tom and I’ve been here since the start of 2019. I first started as a full-stack engineer and after a year in I became a lead engineer. I have always played with computers and loved problem-solving so going into development was a no-brainer.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I love working with the team (and often a whiteboard) to solve the wide variety of engineering projects we have at Signable. The breadth of the work and the creative freedom of the team is fantastic. Paired with a strong team culture we are able to tackle problems without hurdles.

How is Domo different from other companies you’ve worked for?

There has always been a strong focus on company culture at Domo, more than I’ve seen at other companies. This ensures it isn’t just a great place to work, but a place that respects us as human beings.Unlimited holiday and liberal remote working policies recognise that we also have lives outside of work.

What opportunities has Domo given you?

Soon after I started the team attended the VueJS Conference in Amsterdam. Not only did I hear lots of interesting talks about VueJS in areas I probably wouldn’t have considered previously but this acted as a great opportunity to build relationships with the team. These have stuck and have made the transition to lead much easier.

What have you learned at Domo?

Moving from a pure developer role to a leadership role has meant I have learned a huge amount about how to lead a team. If I were to give an example, I now see there is huge value in regular 1:1 catch-up with all team members, even if there isn’t anything specific to discuss.

If you could give one piece of advice to a new starter, what would it be?

At Domo we are big on “adult to adult” conversations, meaning all opinions are respected, whether it is a junior talking to a senior or a new member talking to a veteran.Basically, if you have an opinion don’t be afraid to make it heard!
